A strong cold front and low pressure system will bring much colder air into the area by Sunday.  While temperatures on Saturday will again rise into the 30s and 40s, by Sunday afternoon, the temperature will range from near zero around Huron to the lower 20s in Storm Lake.  On Monday, high temperatures will range from 5 below zero around Huron and Brookings to 5 above zero near Sioux City and Storm Lake.  Expect northwest winds on Sunday of 25 to 40 mph.  These winds will decrease to 15 to 25 mph by Monday afternoon.  The combination of wind and very cold temperatures will result in wind chills of 10 below to 30 below zero Sunday afternoon through Monday.

Specifically in the Lake Park area, a high temperature of 30 degrees is expected on Sunday and will occur around sunrise with falling temperatures throughout the remainder of the day. Highs on Monday will be near zero and highs Tuesday will be in the single digits above zero.

Wind chills by Sunday afternoon will be near zero with the coldest wind chills expected Monday morning in the -20 to -25 degree range. In addition to the winds, snow will be likely Sunday, possibly preceded by a brief period of light freezing rain. Snow accumulations are expected to be light, however, the strong winds will create blowing snow and reduced visibilities.

For those traveling west over the weekend, heavier snow is expected in central and northeastern South Dakota where blizzard watches are posted at this time.
